The biggest environmental issue in Haiti right not is the extensive deforestation that is taking place.
Much of the remaining forested land in Haiti is being cleared for agriculture and used as fuel.
Because of that Haiti has lots of soil erosion
Haiti environmental issue #2 - Lack of potable water
Another environmental issue in Haiti is the inadequate supplies of potable water. There are two entities in Haiti in charge of providing potable water to the population:
1) CAMEP - The Metropolitan Autonomous Station for Potable Water (CAMEP - Centrale Autonome Metropolitaine d'Eau Potable) is the State enterprise responsible for the distribution of potable water in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area
2) SNEP - Service National d'Eau Potable (SNEP) is supposed to provide water nationally.
But neither agency has been able to maintain or update their equipment and water lines, adapt to changes in population, or respond to the country's environmental crisis.
More info: Read "The Strugle for water" by Soshana Guy on PBS.org
according the the article SNEP is only servicing 16 percent to 24 percent of the population leading more than 75% without potable water.
One problem that CAMEP is facing is that their metering system is inconstant and people often break their pipes and steal the water to sell for a profit.
