Forts In Haiti - Fort Dauphin In Fort Liberte Haiti

Fort Dauphin, also known as Fort Saint Joseph or Fort Liberte, is located in the town of Fort Liberte Haiti.

Founded in 1578 and , Fort-Liberte was once called Bayaha by the Indians and the Spanish.

One of the oldest cities in Haiti, Fort Liberte was originally inaugurated as Fort Dauphin in 1731 under the command of Louis XV, king of France.

The fort istself, Fort-Dauphin, was built in 1732.

In 1804, when Haiti won it's independence, the city was renamed Fort Liberte.

When Henri Christophe proclaimed himself King Henri I of Haiti in 1811, he renamed the city Fort-Royal.

After his death in 1820 it became Fort-Liberte once again.

One of the most famous fort in Haiti, Fort Dauphin now lies mostly in ruins.
