There is no evidence Macandal was either a Voodoo Priest, practitioner of Voodoo, Christian or Muslim.
In fact, his oratory implied he believed religion was used to divide people and excuse atrocity.
Boukman may have been a mortal enemy of Macandal as he was a cruel slave overseer though a Voodoo Priest.
Macandal was first and foremost dedicated to higher education, teaching himself to speak eloquent French, having a vast knowledge of plants and their medicinal uses.
He could also paint, sculpt and play music with remarkable skill.
His achievements were trivialized by the French but he may in fact be more responsible for ending black slavery worldwide than any other in history.
